Officially, the state motto is "L'Étoile du Nord" ("The Star of the North"). I think it's absolutely perfect and doesn't need changing at all. The rest are all unofficial nicknames, but we can throw "The Gopher State" out.

Although I do agree with the references to corruption and the exit part, lol that cracks me up when my friend from there still refers to everything as an exit! I don't think in all my time living there I referred much to exit numbers as much as just the actual towns etc.
Me too I referred to the township and/or what backroads to get there.

North Carolina: "The Carolina which is home to slightly better drivers than the other Carolina but you should be always be on the lookout for highway stupidity at all times no matter what".

Too long? Okay then, "The Other Carolina. The decent one, not the bad one".

I saw a list of funny ones once -- the best I recall is

Indiana -- the northernmost southern state'

Seriously, the one I'd really use is: "No, it's Iowa". The answer to "Is this Heaven?", when the ballplayer came out of the cornfield in Field of Dreams.

I"m currently in South Carolina. I'd change it to "Heritage, not hate. The south doesn't need to rise again for it has already arisen, and actually wasn't that down in the first place."
