I am in the planning and research stages of planning to relocate in 2018. I currently live in SC, however I would like to move to an area that will offer opportunities for my sons and for myself. I do not want to move to an area that will have me scare to let my sons outside or that is infected with racism. Also, I would like to be at least within a hour of the beach.

It will be more beneficial for you if you give more criteria than just an hour from a beach and not infected with racism. So you want to leave SC? East coast....west coast? What kind of job opportunities are you and your sons after etc etc. This will be helpful in offering the best advice

P.S. when I was stationed down in SC about 10 years ago we were actually restricted from going to certain establishments off base cause the owners of said establishments were racist...crazy and sad this crap still exists. Hope you find somewhere you and your sons love and can live happily and not have to deal with that.

Unfortunately despite what many might say here, places near the beach in the SE are going to provide what you're looking to avoid in terms of racism in varying degrees. Miami-Ft Lauderdale wouldn't be a bad option from that standpoint but it lacks the opportunities in the job aspect and salaries lag well behind where they should be given the cost of living. I would have a hard time indentifying coastal Texas as a place to escape what you're experiencing in SC also. I would suggest looking to the north at Virginia Beach-Norfolk or the DC-Baltimore suburbs (Bowie, Greenbelt, Odenton) which should provide plenty of employment options and a better sense of place from the racial standpoint. DC-Baltimore is two hours from the beach but the perk of better employment opportunity/salaries might balance that for you.
