During my childhood, my aunt, uncle, maternal grandparents and 3 cousins, lived on a farm in E Thetford. I have memories of blue skies, wild flowers, summer sunshine, a 4H cow named Dolly, shooting at cans in the Connecticut River, and abundant fields of crops.
My thoughts of Vermont are all good.

This was in the 1960s. My uncle paid $20k for 40 acres, a farmhouse and some outbuildings. About 10 years later, they sold for $22k. Later, my cousin told me that the next time the property sold it was for $2 million.

I think of cold weather and pancake/waffle syrup and Ben and Jerry's when I think of Vermont.

Farms, high cost of living, and great place to escape the world.

And housing costs are more expensive than many other places. Add that all together, and a low-wage Texas teacher's pension isn't going to cut it in Vermont for many people.
