I'm giving you my wish list and am interested in where you would relocate me to:

We would like to be in or near the mountains.
I'd like to be near a city that has options for employment, shopping, medical needs, and entertainment - perhaps a college, and an airport that gets me to major cities.
Want some land (just 5-10 acres), and ideally would like to have climate for a nice garden and orchard. Would really like to have weather that was conducive for berries, cherries, or peaches.
Want to be active outside with hiking, biking, etc.

Thoughts?

Perhaps the Knoxville area?

Check the other thread that essentially asks for the same or similar things. Just to throw something out there: GoAdirondack.com-The Adirondack Coast

Apple orchards are in the area. Montreal is about an hour away. It has an "international" airport. It is by Lake Champlain. Has a 2 and 4 year college in the area. It actually has a decent economy, including manufacturing. It is relatively affordable as well.

Charlottesville would be a great option and besides the orchards would give you a decent growing season too versus the "one and done" short seasons in the Northeast. It's the home of the University of Virginia, has a thriving economy and a regional airport to get you in/out to major hubs like Chicago, NY-LaGuardia, Charlotte and DC. The outdoor recreation opportunities are extensive with the neighboring Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah Valley and is quite bike-friendly. UVA Medical Center offers excellent medical care, there's plenty of shopping including a pedestrian-only outdoor shopping mall downtown.

Sounds like ABQ or Boulder is what your looking for. ABQ especially hits every nail (acreage, major metro, forested mountains, int airport, and plentiful drupe fruit production).
Salt lake city is another option, though I cannot attest to the growing conditions or acreage there.

Boise(Area), Idaho
four seasons
Lots of wineries so you know it has a growing season

But don't expect to make a lot of money unless you're a professional.

It sounds like you want to live in Utah.

You'll need to be near Salt Lake City for entertainment, college, and the airport (Delta hub, great airport!). But to get the acreage you'll have to go north, south, or west. I'm west of Salt Lake and love it. Check out a little town called Erda, Utah, for instance. Affordable but some very nice homes on 5 acres. Tons of hiking, biking trails next to the Oquirrh mountains. Great local Master Gardeners group with free monthly workshops on pruning or grafting or hydroponics or whatever. Even a local nursery with a great owner. There's a USU extension close by, or the U of U in Salt Lake. For major shopping/entertainment you're going into Salt Lake, which is like 30-40 minutes away.
