I've noticed that here on the City-Data.com main page you can enter a city and state plus the word "crime" and the website will take you to a map that tells you at a glance whether the local crime rate on a scale of five ratings from very low to very high. The catch is, that only seems to work for incorporated cities and not unincorporated areas or census-designated places. For those places, you do get a map, but it looks so different from the map for incorporated towns that it's not much use for the purposes of comparison.

Also, for large cities I don't see any way to narrow that down by zip code or neighborhood. If you enter "Palms" or "Hollywood" CA the City-Data.com map just shows you all of L.A. The overall crime rate for L.A. is reported to be average, but that takes in everything from Pacific Palisades and Bel Air to South Central and Pico Union. In the case of L.A. you can find more detailed information by going to the Mapping L.A. section of the L.A. Times website, but that only works for L.A. County.

Is there a way to get statistics for small localities, e.g. by zip code? Either on City-Data or elsewhere?
