If you are speaking of cities that are compact, but still have sprawling suburbs, then the answer would be San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, perhaps even Miami and Tampa when you look at city limits.

What major American city lacks a core? Even cities with a ton of annexed land in their current boundaries, such as Jacksonville, tend to have a historic/semi-urban center.

I have noticed that DC is possibly compact also.

Perhaps Providence, Hartford, Bridgeport, New Haven or even many Great Lakes area cities.

In terms of density and a more walkable factor I would say Boston and DC are pretty equivalent.
