There are definitely places with studios and 1BRs for 500 in safe areas, but a lot of them might be considered boring depending on what your tastes are

You could live in Southern Indiana in the New Albany area. It's actually a pretty decent area, some poverty but it's up & coming. They've done a lot of work & nice things in the downtown area.

Plus you'd be right across the bridge to Louisville,KY...About a 10 minute drive to downtown Louisville

It's not that weird to me because the demand for living in NYC and comparable cities is extremely high, and it's 100% a seller's market. In most of the country this isn't the case.

Here in Southeastern Pennsylvania (Lehigh Valley/Reading/Harrisburg -- NOT Philly) $500/mo gets you an unfurnished single room (shower down the hall), often in an older building that was once a hotel in a small rural community -- other times in a large house. You need to spend a bit more to get a few more amenities, but if a lifestyle with a lot of mobility and not too much commitment, this is not a bad deal, and you can often get a break or two if your neighbors get to know you and you have something to bring to the table; think Steinbeck's Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday.
