What cities could you get a studio apartment in a good area for like $500 a month?

Hmm...what's a good area? I think you might be able to grab something on the fringes of Riverside or San Marco for that price...at least you could a few years ago. You can definitely be in the rougher part of Murray Hill for that price at the moment, but that probably won't be true soon.

These studios would all be very close to popular areas but still somewhat sketchy.

Check out Lakewood OH. the western border suburb of Cleveland that's very walkable to nearby services like shops/restaurants, has excellent bus/rail service and is a nice desirable area too.

As long as it isn't like New York, LA, San Fran, or your rapidly growing young professional hip cities (e.g. Austin, Denver, Nashville, and Phoneix) then you should able to find a studio around that price or only slightly more in most areas across the country.

Actually you'd be surprised at some of the amazing bargains you can find in NYC. They're hard to find, like a four leaf clover, but they're there. I think a lot of them you need connections for, though or its more rigorous to rent.

You may be able to find some income-restricted units in larger cities for that price or close to it.
