We will be moving to North Carolina or South Carolina before school starts in September. We narrowed down our search to these two states based on the weather and proximity to the coast.

Since we have never been to either state, we would appreciate any information to help us decide where to relocate.

We are looking for a city within 10 miles of a beach, good schools with a high school lacrosse team, employment opportunities with a utility company, activities for families and a reasonable cost of living.

Any help with our search will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The only city in NC that can meet your requirements is Wilmington, so from an NC perspective, thats pretty easy. I would suspect Charleston would be the only city in SC that meets your criteria, although I have no idea if high lacrosse exists there. You should post on the Charleston board for more information on that. There are many existing threads on this board about Wilmington.

I think if you chose a coastal location, you would have to sacrifice your childrens lacrosse aspirations if they are hoping to play in a Division 1 program in college. The best lacrosse programs at HS level as well as the Division 1 schools that recruit from them area in the central part of the state, a region known as the Piedmont.

Here's a state overview where they describe the Piedmont region in more detail: https://www.visitnc.com/piedmont

Actually three of the coastal SC high schools are highly ranked within the state, Wando HS in Mt Pleasant (north of Charleston) is #1, Hilton Head HS is #2 in SC and Carolina Forest in Conway is #14. Rest assured Division I scouts from across the SE (bare minimum) are checking out ranked 5-A Lacrosse programs. Both areas should provide work opportunity as well, especially Hilton Head given it's close proximity to Savannah and Mt Pleasant being part of the Charleston metro. Hilton Head isn't that pricey in some areas, Mt Pleasant is uniformly above average and Conway is quite reasonable in terms of housing costs.

Thank you so much for the information. Do you know if there are employment opportunities with a utility company in either of these locations?

Your requirements are pretty open which is a good thing, every metro area has utility companies and nice suburbs with good schools. I don't know anything about lacrosse but if there isn't a school team there will definitely be a community team. What slims your options is the requirement to be so close to the water, that leaves on Wilmington in NC and Myrtle Beach and Charleston in SC.

I don't know anything about Wilmington, so I won't give advice on that city.

I would avoid Myrtle Beach, it's like Daytona in Florida. It could be fun to spend some time on vacation but it has a seedy element: things like biker gangs and methamphetamine and prostitution. I know it's everywhere but it seems to be pretty blatant in MB, I wouldn't raise kids there.

Charleston is really nice, it's a very cultural and relaxed city, and unlike other big Carolinas cities it is a lot more local which gives it a unique culture that wouldn't be found elsewhere. There are some really bad areas, but they shouldn't be very hard to avoid. Mount Pleasant is a nice place for families.

Good luck!

Actually Conway/Carolina Forest are very family friendly areas and not interchangeable with Myrtle Beach. Additionally there are nice areas minus the seedy elements in Myrtle Beach along with North Myrtle Beach, Garden City and Surfside Beach as well. To cast the entire areas as one-dimensional demonstrates a lack of knowledge and would question your intent given the massive inaccuracies.

Well I apologize then, I was simply relaying my experiences having spent many long weekends there as a kid/young teenager. I'm no expert and you seem to know better than I, so I defer to thee.
