With the Lakers getting the 2nd overall draft choice and with the likely hood of them selecting Lonzo Ball. There's a lot of hope that the kid from the area will be the next franchise player to bring this iconic team back to glory.

What other situations are similar throughout history? There probably hasn't been many, but name some of greatest instances of a hometown kid staying home or going back home.

As a basketball fan and avid Kobe/Lakers hater. Leaving my hate aside, i know that talent that he is, but don't expect Lonzo Ball to be the second coming based on what we've seen. I think he would at least require 2 more "superstar" players around him to bring that team back to "glory".

Your obvious next example would be LeBron.

I do agree. I'm not 100% sold that Lonzo alone will get us out of hell but if he's anything like Jason Kidd, I'll take it. He certainly has a lot of hype though so it's easy to get sucked in by it.

Yes, definitely Lebron without a doubt. He's the perfect example. The other two big time 2003 draftees have tried going back home to far less success.

It's funny, LA has so many great athletes out in the league right now and none of them are playing for the hometown teams. Frustrating.

Cal Ripken Jr. is probably one of the best examples. Hall-of-famer drafted by his hometown Orioles, and played his WHOLE career in Baltimore.

Wilt Chamberlain may be up there due to his time with the Philadelphia Warriors and Philadelphia 76ers.

This is the same thing we're going through in DC (KD shunned us), but at least you guys will have Lonzo it looks like this year.

Pete Rose, Whitey Ford, Lou Gehrig, Nolan Ryan and Rickey Henderson are examples from the baseball world (though Rose is no longer viewed as a hero of any sort).
