Does this exist? We're a fairly conservative, married couple with three small children. We love the smallish town (20k) that we live in but are still frustrated by the "keeping up with the Joneses" nature of things. Ideally, we would teleport back to the 70's or 80's when raising kids was a different (more relaxed) ball game, but since that's not an option, is there any place that still exists where no one cares if I feed my kids Goldfish for lunch or not, where iPhones for preteens are illegal (ha!) and where people are just really chill (but where us conservatives would fit in)?!
Old stereotypes die hard. Jacksonville is very much "middle of the road" and has been for nearly a decade.
The OP seemed like they were looking for a place where conservatives would feel comfortable, not necessarily a hardcore tea party stronghold. It's all relative. For larger cities, Jacksonville is statistically more conservative in a political sense and has more evangelical protestants. Compared to small town Oklahoma or Kansas, Jacksonville might be a bastion of diversity and progressive politics.
All of these suggestions seem too large for a family that says that they enjoy their 20K person town that already has too much "keeping up with the Joneses".
Maybe the OP is right that they need a different time, not a different city.
Omaha or Des Moines might work. Both are more middle of the road than conservative but they are both the sort of places where people still get along regardless of what side of the spectrum they are on. They are also both very laid back about keeping up with the Joneses sort of stuff. In general, I think plains states like Iowa or Nebraska probably have exactly what you are looking for.

I'm going to be keeping up with this thread, while I have no kids, my wife and I are looking for something very similar!
Tons of small towns around the Winston Salem-Greensboro-High Point NC area that would fit the bill. You can get that Mayberry RFD feeling in this part of the country very easily. (The real town Mayberry was based on was in NC anyway. But Mt. Airy, on the NC/VA border is more isolated and further away from any larger city) The three cities of the Triad could actually work too if they don't feel too big for the OP. The largest one is Greensboro, and it only has about 250,000. It is nice to have cities of some size nearby, however, for hospitals and medical needs, entertainment options, and of course, employment opportunities. The whole region is pretty laid-back, low-intensity, and non-judgmental. Like a lot of places the cities will lean Democratic and the suburbs lean Republican. But it is not very intense politically for the most part, and social conservatism, generally of the milder variety, is omnipresent.
