“They have what I call the X-Factor of Urbanism. Very cool, historic and filled with interesting shops and restaurants, surrounded with walkable neighborhoods,” says Robert Gibbs, an urban planner who has worked with 300 cities and teaches at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design.

um, he's talking about downtown areas. From the article: 'He shares some favorite downtown districts with Larry Bleiberg for USA TODAY.'

This article seems like its not just a list of best shopping streets/districts in a core. But a list of up and coming restoring ones? The Key players are not mentioned. Like NYC's 5th Ave, Chicago's N Michigan Ave, LA area Rodeo Dr. or SF's Fillmore St. They have been well established.

Great our city cores are bouncing back. No one should lessen any streets value listed to their respective cities as to say none are like a NYC.

I prefer some on his list to the ones that you mention. It is obviously an opinion and personal preference for everybody. I don't care for NYC or downtown areas dominated by skyscrapers.

Then I'm confused. The article makes reference to both shopping streets and downtown districts. Shopping streets is even in the title. And listed are specific streets, not whole areas.

What difference does it make?

None really, but the guy isn't really sharing some of his favorite Downtown areas. Just found it odd that it's focused on shopping streets.

Ok, so he said these are some of his favorite downtown districts but he isn't really sharing his favorite downtown areas. That seems like a contradiction to me. These are all downtown areas.

Yes, that is what I meant. Hence why I was confused.
