I was wondering, besides the obvious example of San Francisco, what neighborhoods in the USA have lots of 19th/early 20th c. Victorian and Edwardian style housing, particularly residential houses and rowhouses?
Cape May NJ has the largest collection of Victorian style homes outside of SF. It was Americas first Seaside resort and the whole town is considered a national landmark and all architecture is preserved today see this link Victorian Cape May
Many towns in upstate NY and northern PA had wealth in the Victorian era and not as much since. It still isn't easy to find web links to some of these areas because they're still not well off.
One example is the streets around the downtown of Cortland, NY The 1890 House Museum .
Looking it up Louisville, Kentucky apparently has something called "Old Louisville" that reportedly preserved much Victorian architecture. Their official site is hard to work, but one part of it isn't too bad.
Believe it or not, Manistee, MI has quite a few Victorian homes. As does Traverse City, MI and Mackinaw Island, MI. They were built by the lumber barons and the wealthier families back in the 1800's.
Both Minneapolis and St Paul have a lot of Victorian era homes, as both cities were boom-towns during the late 1800s. Of the two, I'd give the nod to St Paul because of the concentration of Victorians along eastern Summit Avenue and the Ramsey Hill neighborhood.
Here is one site I found with a few representitive photos:
Dave's Victorian House Site - St. Paul Gallery (http://users.rcn.com/scndempr/dave/stpaul/stpaulgal.html - broken link)
st. louis's lafayette square neighborhood has one of the largest concentrations of 2nd empire victorian architecture in the country.
