Good day everyone! We currently live in Chicago and would like to move to somewhere where I can continue to grow in technology experience and be able to provide for my family. Chicago has been a great place but it has become family unfriendly with the expensive rents. Also, the violence makes it difficult to live there.

I have obtained a Cisco CCNA but the only city offering something in this field was Austin, TX and at one point Dallas but I realize that they only give jobs to locals.

I am seeking help in finding any towns or cities that have:
  • Affordable housing with a nice backyard especially a 3-bedroom and I can find work in technology that will continue to help me grow.
  • Mild climate so that our kids can spend most of the year outside.
  • Safe area (my wife home schools so schools are not a focus).
Nice to haves:
  • Preferably an area with many trees.
  • Cultural zest.
  • Slow paced.
I know more of cities than towns that would provide some of this like Austin, Dallas, but what about Raleigh-Durham-Chapel triangle, Huntsville, AL and other places that you may know? I have been reading many of the City-Data posts but these latter ones don't get mentioned like some years ago.

Also my wife is Hispanic and would not like her to run into any racial situations with our 3 children. Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Durham NC would be a great choice and nails your criteria thoroughly. Finding a job in your field in the Raleigh-Durham market would be fairly easy with salaries as competitive of more expensive cities, affordable housing (buy or rent), a mild four season climate, cultural and racial diversity, lots of trees/greenery and a much slower pace with plenty to do when desired. I lived there for several years and miss it very much!

The northern Atlanta suburbs in particular could work for you.

Thanks for the answers, it's encouraging to find places that fit that criteria. I was suggested Florida too, but haven't really heard anything myself.

Sure plenty of IT jobs in Jax and Tampa, and probably to some degree in Orlando and Miami. In the case of Jax, I have plenty of friends who work in the field and do great given the low COL, but at the same time I would question what kind of career growth the positions in Jax could offer you.

Neither Orlando or Miami can be considered affordable however based on housing costs (especially if renting) versus salaries. Jacksonville for now evades that and Tampa is at the threshold.

You should try Charleston sc. They have a growing tech sector happening right now with a lot of start ups. Should be pretty easy to get a job

You could look into Knoxville, TN. You will save a mint in taxes and there are IT jobs available. Salaries will be lower than Chicago, but it should be a relative upgrade.

Is this true? Or is it Charlotte, NC?
