Kind of whacked out and all over the board if one considers Durham was #1 on the Growella list and didn't make either Top 35 list even though neighboring Raleigh did.
This list is a terrible idea for an "average" person as far as cost of living goes. Anyone with a normal paying job couldn't make it in San Francisco,San Jose, Seattle, etc... unless they had 10 roommates. I understand the scenery & things to do factor, but it's just not accurate.

It's all relative really.. I was pretty "average" and did NYC, Chicago and SF in my 20's. I think those cities provided me with opportunities and upward mobility that I wouldnt have had if I moved to Durham instead.

The cost of living is a just tad overstated (as usual) on this forum when it comes to NYC and SF, etc.
Strangely enough millions of residents from those cities manage to live comfortably alone or with one other in desirable non-ramshackle housing.

I wouldn't say overstated, the average price of a 1 bedroom in SF is $3500. I live in the "East Bay" around Walnut Creek (30 mins from SF) and pay $2200 for a 2 bedroom, which is obviously more affordable, but still not cheap by any means.
The average person, making $50K-$70K will not find it easy to manage everything here, without roommates.

I agree that these places definitely have potential and great opportunities, but if you come here on a very limited budget, It just won't be near as enjoyable.
I live 30 minutes from SF (around Walnut Creek) and make decent $$$, therefor enjoy what the area has to offer. But someone not as fortunate, would be more prone to struggle of finances

All true... it can go either way. You work hard and get lucky and continue to prosper or you struggle.
It is nice to see 2 Upstate NY areas on the list and goes to show that cost of living is a city/metro area thing, not a state thing.
