What defines out west?

Upstate New York, West Virginia, Ohio, Missouri, Rocky Mtns, West coast? How far is west?

Please define large population and moderate temps while we're at it.

So far we have west, diverse, safe, indie bookstores, large populations, moderate temps, hiking trails, parks, not harsh weather (harsh as in high temps, humidity, or low temps) all under $2500. $2500 is like NYC, LA, or SF prices. A lot of places will be under that. You are still very vague.

$2500 is doable in most parts of California if that is of interest to you. I live in Northern California in a nice, small town called Pleasant Hill, which is next door to Walnut Creek and about 30 minutes from SF. The $2500 would be plenty in this area, however it does get warm in the East Bay (Mid-90's in summer).

That being said, there are plenty of coastal towns near SF like Daly City and Pacifica that would fit your $2500 budget, be diverse, have great weather, great scenery, and plenty of hiking.
