My employer is closing the California office that I work in. They have 2 offices that they are giving us the choice to relocate. The cities are High Point, NC and Lake Mary, FL. I will be moving my wife and 3 children (3, 9 and 14). I'm looking for opinions on the typical issues. Schools, cost of living, crime, etc. I am also interested in surrounding cities and towns. As a family, we enjoy outdoor activities like camping. The one thing that the whole family likes (even the teenager), is boating/water sports. I don't think the humidity will be a large consideration. Any info on these areas would be great. Also, if anyone has any info on Jiu Jitsu/MMA schools for kids in these areas.
I live in the Lake Mary area and given your family desire for camping/outdoor recreation would highly recommend High Point instead which has very nearly year-round opportunity with close proximity to beautiful state/national parks and the mountains. The heat/humidity here in Central Florida makes a minimum of six months of the year inhospitable for outdoor activities, even among natives. The cost of living aspect will be a benefit in the High Point area as well (a good 20% less) and having researched that area myself would recommend the Oak Ridge and Summerfield areas in NW Greensboro for schools/family-friendliness. Either would be around 30 minutes or less/20 miles to High Point with minimal traffic.
Wow...I really appreciate the feedback here. Does anybody know about colleges in the area?
You have some great options in the Greensboro-Winston Salem-High Point area. There's UNC-Greensboro which is by far the largest and most comprehensive in terms of offerings. Just to the east of Greensboro is Elon University which has a good reputation academically, Wake Forest University in Winston Salem is among the national elites, there's North Carolina A&T in Greensboro and Winston Salem State U which are both HBCUs, then you have good smaller liberal arts colleges like Guilford College in Greensboro, Greensboro College and Salem College (a prestigious women's college in Winston Salem), the U of NC School of the Arts in Winston Salem and High Point University in High Point.
Thanks again for all the replies here. Looks like NC would be the place.
