I'm looking to move somewhere rural with a cheaper cost of living, and I'm not too picky, but one of my main concerns is good fishing and access to public lands.
A few other things I'd like:
1. Within 30-40 minutes of a town of ~5-10k people. As long as this requirement is met, I'll be able to find a job fairly easily given my current career.
2. Not too much snow. Snow is fine, but not North Dakota or Alaska or anything like that.
3. I'd like to be able to buy 5-10 acres for less than $100k.
Within those parameters, which would you say is the best (or your favorite) state for fishing?
The Gainesville-Lake City area in North Central Florida has some of the best freshwater fishing in the country and some good options within 30 minutes of either city.

Thanks for the recommendation, that looks great! I wonder how well I might adapt to the humidity coming from the West, though. Are land prices decent in North Central Florida?

People usually adapt to the humidity and land prices are pretty good I think. I had attached homes with land in the link prior. Here's some "land only" listings in the same area.
Even if I'm mostly interested in freshwater fishing?
HERE ARE THE 10 STATES WITH THE BEST BASS FISHING
6. Florida
Texas and the Great Lakes states aside, you can bet there are more than a few bass anglers who would rank the paradise of Florida near the top of the bass fishing list. Lake Okeechobee is the state’s bass Mecca (and number two on Bassmaster’s top 100 lakes list), but there’s a reason that Florida also comes in second on that list in total bodies of water. Seven Florida lakes landed on the Bassmaster top 100, and from Lake Seminole to the Everglades (pictured) to Lake Tarpon, the Sunshine State has plenty to offer for anglers looking to take it easy in the warm weather.
Isn't the snow pretty heavy in most of rural New York?
