My husband and I both do professional work from our home and are in our 60's. We have no children. We want to move away from Southern California for many reasons and have made a list of what we would like to find in a new city. This is our list:
Not too far from a larger city of 400,000 (an hour drive is fine)
Friendly people
Altitude under 2,000 feet (medical reason)
Many restaurants nearby, especially Mom and Pop types
Good medical care (in larger city nearby is fine)
Somewhat temperate weather - reasonable snow is fine; we loved living near Moscow, PA but health-wise the extreme snow and cold was too much.
Low crime
Conservative area with moral values
Fine arts, plays, entertainment - things to do like this
We are both friendly, helpful people. We love all animals and prefer to live a rural type life on close to 5 acres (as we do now) with our 3 horses, 2 goats, dogs and assorted other pets.

Southern Indiana could be a great fit for you all! Towns like Corydon, Floyds Knobs, Lanesville, Georgetown, and Sellersburg are full of friendly people, and land a plenty to own, not to mention very affordable!
Louisville, KY is a major city close by as well, with good hospitals, healthcare, museums, and a ton to do! Corydon, IN would be the furthest out, but it is still within 30-40 minutes of downtown Louisville. The other towns are within 15-30 minutes as well!

Honestly, I'd recommend Abilene, Texas. Nice small city with friendly people. Only 2 hours west of Fort Worth. Compared to much of Texas, I find the weather to be pleasant. Summers are hot but much less humid than places further east, and you get all 4 seasons and a touch of snow every once in a while. It has a small town friendly easy going vibe but with enough restaurants and stores and hospitals as well so it has some urbanity.
Also compared to much of Texas, it has nicer scenery. There's noticeable hills nearby and a handful of decent lakes to enjoy fishing or going on a boat or laying on (slightly rocky) beach. Also the public pool there is the best I've seen in any city. Very clean and nice deep water.

This sounds excellent. The only thing that worries me is the distance to get to Fort Worth. I will have to check futher though and my thanks for your suggestion.

Yea its a bit more remote compared to much of Texas but the trade off is you don't have to deal with the insane traffic like you do in DFW or around Austin or Houston!
