Given the size and nature of the Great Lakes (which hardly seem like lakes at all....except for their fresh water), do you consider they have a "coast" or a "shore"?
Shore. It's not about size. Coast implies ocean. Though you can describe the culture and lifestyle of Michigan or eastern Wisconsin as "coastal" (a better word is "nautical") the Great Lakes are still not "coasts."

Although they do have the "Coast Gaurd" But I agree, around these parts you here local media colloquially refer to the region as "Grand Rapids and the Lakeshore". Clinically it is a shoreline. To a point it may be in the opinion of the beholder and more of an argument of semantics.
I'm from New Jersey originally and most people call the Atlantic coastal beaches "the shore". The term has nothing to do with size at least how we use it.
Chicago has both being a huge body of water ...... from the air like a plane? It has a Coastline. From the ground .... it has a shoreline. They Also call the Coast of New Jersey..... the Jersey shore too. On-Line dictionaries .....
DEFINITION -- SHORLINE:
- Merriam-Webster --- the land along the edge of an area of water (such as an ocean, lake, etc.) : a coast or shore.
- Collins English -- is the edge of a sea, lake , or wide river.
- Free dictionary -- the line of intersection between the surface of a sea or lake and the surface of the land. It is the boundary of a given water basin.
DEFINITION -- COASTLINE:
- Merriam-Webster-- the line that forms the boundary between the land and the OCEAN or LAKE.
- Definition~of -- (Noun) stretch of land bordering the OCEAN or OTHER large body of water.
- Longman Geography -- the land on the edge of the coast, especially the shape of this land as seen from the air.
So this is a coastline too ......from the air at least.
Chicago is the largest city on the Great Lakes.
Chicago's most famous drag is Lakeshore Drive.
Therefore, I vote for 'shore'.
When I first saw the title of this thread, Lakeshore Drive immediately came to mind, so I voted for 'shore'. I can see how on land we'd call it a 'shore', but from above, or in other instances, it would be called a 'coast'.
