Typically, I say I'm from South Dakota since that is where I grew up. I don't consider myself from Wisconsin, even though it's where I live now. Then again, Wisconsin isn't permanent. When I find a place I want to live long term, then maybe I'll say that's where I'm from, but most likely not.

The DC area is a bit strange because it's a district that heavily influences burbs in two different states - MD and VA burbs. I say I'm from the DC area on the VA side. Most people don't know what NOVA is outside of CD.

I think it depends on the context. Usually I think it means where you grew up. But if you're on vacation as a tourist somewhere and some local asks where you're from they're probably asking where you're visiting from (aka where you currently live) and not asking for your life story.

Unless they ask where I was ORIGINALLY from, I tell them from where I was last.
Because I assume they want to know where I came from as I'm "not from these here parts".

When I travel I say I'm from wherever I live at the time.

I've moved several times, lived in a few states, and although I have "returned home" ( to where I was mostly raised) I wasn't born nor ORIGINALLY from here, either.

So it depends.
Lol

I say I'm from a little bit of everywhere but that once I got to Texas, I decided it was home for me. It's been my home now for 25 years. (I was a military brat and then military wife for the first 30 years of my life.)

Nope. In literally a week though! I was up there for a few days a few weeks ago.

Technically born in Texas, and currently live in Texas. I respond with "I'm from Texas/DFW/specific municipality I live in at the time (depending on where I am being asked), but my parents are from Korea." Because if I don't add the last part, they are almost certainly going to ask where my ancestors or parents are from (or worse, ask where I am "really" from).
