Just like the one for urban Southern neighborhoods, what would be similar examples of urban Western neighborhoods that would be viewed as being "gritty"?

Drug use, abandoned houses, housing projects, empty lots, grafiittied arroyos, traffic diverters, and high crime rate.

Case in point: Albuquerque's International District. AKA the "War Zone"

San Francisco neighborhoods like Haight-Asbury, Mission District, Tenderloin and The Castro have retained a gritty feel.

There are "pockets" of gritty areas in almost all cities/towns in Northern California/Bay Area.

West Coast cities tend to have heavy demand for space particularly close-in, which tends to push the grittiness to the older suburbs (and sometimes newer ones) in the unfavored quarter(s).

We also have the post-extraction-industry towns and exurbs, where our sawmills etc. are much like old car parts plants in the Midwest and textile mills in the South.

Skid Row/Sixth Street will probably always have that feel too.

West Oakland around San Pablo/Market Street intersection

Tenderloin in SF is easily #1 - very urban and very gritty.

In Seattle, the International District and parts of Pioneer Square are definitely gritty. Tacoma has a couple of pretty gritty inner-core neighborhoods as well.
