I am trying to plan a solo winter vacation. Last year I did Seattle and love it. This year, I want to do either Portland or Vancouver. This will be from Dec 26-Dec 31. Keep in mind that the rain doesnít bither me a bit! The things I like to do consist of: walk around and explore downtown area, take cool photos via Iphone, eat at different local restaurants, shop, see art, go to bars, and nightclubs. Which city should i visit? Iím a 23 year old male, if that makes a difference.

I'm gonna say Vancouver offers a more dynamic urban/overall experience, esp. when paired with how close by nature is. If you do that, you must at least try and spend a couple days around Whistler also. Portland is great also, may have better prices (not sure) and has a bit more of a hippie/independent vibe (though Vancouver has a good amount of that). Vancouver may feel safer and more inviting overall though. Same goes for Portland, BTW. I would try to get out at least to the Columbia River Gorge, possibly also Mount Hood National Forest or Astoria as well.

I second Vancouver. It has much more to offer and would throw in Victoria as well which is stunning.

We go to both Vancouver BC and Portland several times a year, for the day or overnight. Both offer what you are looking for, but I also give the nod to Vancouver. For shopping, meals, and lodging, the Canadian dollar exchange rate has an advantage over the lack of sales tax in Portland. Vancouver also has much more natural beauty, and just being another country makes it more interesting. Be aware that while you may enjoy rain, both cities have a good chance of snow that time of year, in fact late December/early January is the most likely time for snow.

I lived in Portland and have family in Vancouver. I would choose Vancouver for a more cosmopolitan atmosphere and variety of experience.
