There are far less blacks out West- that explains it. Besides California is prejudiced against whites, and legal American citizens.

Several reasons why I feel it's true, such as 7 of the top 10 Metro Areas for Interracial Marriage being in the Mountain and Pacific Time zone and the Republican Leaning States in the West, like Utah, don't have stuff like Strict Voter ID laws, laws against minimum wage increases and other laws that disenfranchise visible minorities.

However this map, by the SPLC, that addresses hate groups, well, look at the glaring contrasts.

Yes, there are still a higher number than other states, in California, but when you consider it's population, the # of groups relative, to that #, (almost 40 million people) is low compared to Texas and Florida.

There's a reason why I live out here and this is one of them.
Do you not realize that map roughly correlates with population density maps of the US? And that the West just has way less people in general than the East? And that many of those empty spots are empty because they are largely uninhabited?

California also has a long, long history of racism against Chinese, Japanese, and other Asian minorities that goes way back. Even now I understand there are some areas of the state where there are serious and notable tensions between white and Asian populations regarding housing, schools, or retail issues.

And of course white Californians have long had issues with Hispanics, despite the fact that some have been in the state for generations. (And yes, I know that technically Hispanics are not a "race". But the bigotry and hatred they sometimes face can be the same as the racism we speak of in black/white terms.)

That's been my experience as well.

In my experience Massachusetts is the most blatantly racist place I have ever been. I had a lady in a bar, a total stranger, tell to avoid an area of town because it was full of N word crime. Every time I visit Boston I encounter some blatantly racist strangers. It absolutely gets worse as you go into smaller town New England.

I had an acquaintance in college who was from St Louis who was what I guess you could call a casual racist. Interestingly enough he had more black friends than just about anyone I've ever known and who were all pretty racist against white people themselves.

As insensitive as some of the stuff that was said between that group they got along alot better than most of the awkward interactions I see between some black and white people regarding race.

Not that that makes any of it ok.
I don't know. The Boston area is inhabited by the very very rich and they can be hypocrites. They can be oh-so-liberal and yet they don't want low income housing in their town or a black family moving in next door.

Most of the state is NOT Boston however. We have cities and towns. You don't see many black people in the small towns so there could be racism if a black person moved in. People would be suspicious but people in small towns are suspicious of every newcomer.

So I don't know about racism in MA--I never hear much about it. There isn't a large black population here.

BTW, my sister from Massachusetts was shocked when she tried to move to North Carolina and the realtor steered her away from neighborhoods that had black people. Came right out and told her! So they moved to Virginia and she says the people are more tolerant there.

Yeah my buddy lives near Worcester, MA which I know isn't Boston, It was even more blatant out there.

Isn't Boston famous for having racist sports fans? I seem to remember seeing that in a recent 30 for 30 on the Lakers vs Celtics rivalry and I recall a pretty recent incident at a Sox game.

MA don't have a particularly small black population, at 8% its a little lower than the national average of like 12%, but is about middle of the road in terms of percentage, besides, I don't most people think you need a large black percentage to be considered racist a racist place. Idaho has one of the smallest black populations both in percentage and actual number and yet still has an (incorrect) reputation for being a racist place.

That's called Confirmation Bias, a couple weeks ago someone spray pained the N-Word on LeBron's LA house and nobody said a word.

Overall LA has far worse racial problems than Boston, look at its history, over 100 people have died in Race Riots in LA, in Boston? 0.
