Seem's like people are all over the board here... I guess that means that there really is a state for everyone.

I'm retired. I picked the places for their beauty (has to be green, no desert-like), cost (livable on my pension), at least somewhat politically compatible and not too hot (no states that border the Gulf of Mexico - Summer is my least favorite season). I might pick 5 different places if I was still working full time.

1. Tennessee
2. West Virginia
3. Kentucky
4. New Hampshire
5. Wisconsin

State I've never been to that I would consider if I liked it: Nebraska.

I'm a city guy and these are definitely my top 4 states due to the plethora of large cities (and NYC) to choose from.

1) CA
2) FL
3) TX
4) NY

#5 is much harder to decide...VA, TN, PA and OH are all possibilities for their variety of options, not to mention some states that should be considered based on one city alone.

1. Alaska (note I've never been there, so could be wrong, it just seems like the Fairbanks area would suit me perfectly)
2. Maine (preferably near the coast)
3. New York (central/rural areas, nowhere near NYC)
4. Pennsylvania (the central area where I live now, or upstate more in the mountains)
5. ... I don't really have a fifth state I've ever considered living in. Delaware and Vermont both look okay on the surface.

(Not in ranked order)

Washington
Oregon
California
Colorado
North Carolina

Honorable mentions: Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York (With the possible exception of Maine, I like these states more for their cities/towns, whereas the primary list is for that, plus the scenery/other attractions).
