Good post and a very thought provoking question!

My choices are in order of preference:

1. Virginia - absolutely my favorite state hands down. Four seasons, mountains and beaches and everything in between, big cities, lots of rural areas, lots of focus on history, good diversity - I love it. And yes, I've lived there. I'd move back in a heartbeat.
2. Texas - where I currently live and the state my husband can't imagine leaving. I do like a lot about Texas and I'm happy here. Very interesting culture, very friendly people, great food, lots of diversity (in case you can't tell, I like diversity), the big cities have a lot to offer but there are lots of rural areas and mid size cities as well. Great cost of living. I've lived here 25 years and I love it.
3. Ohio - we have lots of family there and I like a lot of things about that area anyway. I like Ohio cities - they seem picturesque to me in a way. My family lives in western Ohio and close to the Great Lakes, so that would be cool. I've lived in Ohio before. It just has a homey, Americana feel to it that I like. Sort of "salt of the earth."
4. Maryland - I like Maryland for the same reasons I love Virginia. I've lived there too - actually twice. My favorite part of the US is the East Coast. The whole thing, but especially the Tidewater regions of VA and MD.
5. Maine - the outlier. Never lived there, but I've visited and WOW what a beautiful state. I really like Portland. I have lived in Germany before and we had long, snowy, cold winters and that was fine by me so I think I could deal with the long winters in exchange for the nice summers and gorgeous falls. Life seems slower paced in Maine but I could deal with that too - I'm pretty simple when it comes to what I like to do - basically go for walks, read, sit on the patio as often as possible (with a fire pit is even better!), that sort of thing. Walking on the beach is my favorite walking style! I love that Maine coast.

Honorable mentions: North Carolina, Georgia (north Georgia).

Strong list.

New York is underated ....much more than just NYC, has Adrondacks, Catskills,
Finger Lakes, 1000 Islands, Hudson Valley....etc...

New Mexico ....what can I say, the Land of Enchantment.

1. Wisconsin
2. Minnesota
3. Pennsylvania
4. Massachusetts
5. New York (would rank #3 if NYC weren't included, and I was just considering the "upstate" part)

Here are the 5 states that nobody has listed. I think we can agree that makes them the BOTTOM 5:

Arkansas
Indiana
Mississippi
North Dakota
Oklahoma (lived here for 20 years)

Mine, in order:

1) Hawai'i, for its tropical temps and lush landscapes. We visit as frequently as we can.
2) Vermont for its natural northern beauty
3) Georgia, combo of tropical and yet also has a mountainous feel in the north. Our planned retirement state.
4) upstate N.Y. state. It's removed from the hustle and bustle of The City. It's where we live now.
5)Arizona, again for natural beauty.

I'll throw in a 6th. I like the Maryland State area. It is a bit more hustle and bustle than upstate N.Y., but it's summer season lasts longer and spring arrives about a month/ month and a half before upstate N.Y. s does. We have considered moving there as a stop gap to retirement.

I see by others lists in the early posts, my favorites are also some other's favorites, too.

NM also goes by the nick-name Land of Entrapment. I guess it means once you move there, it is difficult to leave for whatever reason.

Never heard of "1000 Islands" in NY. Where is that?

Most of NY is much different than NYC. Everyone can enjoy the public lands of the Adirondacks and the Catskills. I don't recall is one has to be a resident of NY state, though.

In terms of state government, people, and public services, does Vermont outpace Upstate NY by a lot?
