Detroit would be an awesome bang for their buck. Educated populace, close to major universities, cheap land, lots of cheap rehab house opportunities. Detroit could really use the jolt of money and people. Here in Seattle, we've had sufficient and it's time to spread the wealth around.
Austin makes a good choice with the Whole Foods takeover. DFW and Atlanta offer similar amenities and would be good choices. I think DC and Boston are as well. Houston is a long shot with Jeff Bezos' ties to the area.

Eh, I think that's overblown and I'm no fan of NC's legislature whatsoever; the state is still seeing major economic gains. You'd better believe they will shell out the incentives for this headquarters and that's what Amazon cares about first and foremost.

True, but that hasn't stopped NY, NJ, and CT from hemorrhaging companies. Illinois is in a classic death spiral.
Illinois is not in a death spiral if you are looking for company HQ that have located to the Chicago area, and Chicago was ranked 1st in corporate expansion.

lots of states are going to throw money at Amazon, and those states didn't actively try to block one of Amazons major projects. That is a big strike against North Carolina.

Microsoft doesn't dominate Seattle, as a matter fact if I had to say any one company dominates Seattle, it would be Amazon. They're bringing 50,000 jobs to whatever city they choose. They will almost certainly be the dominant corporate force in just about any city outside of New York and Chicago.
