Jacksonville City Council vice president states that Amazon asked specifically for Jacksonville leaders to submit a bid. This certainly occurred with a number of other cities, but gives a little bit of insight into Jax's participation. The same councilman thinks Amazon will narrow down its choices by the end of March, but he says it is just a guess based on the conversations they had back in September.
Weird, because Jacksonville is not on the short list.
I think it will be DC or NYC... if this is purely a marketing ploy why would they list multiple areas for any city? They would have just said DC and NYC and included others like Houston or Charlotte. I know people keep mentioning COL but as long it's comparable to Seattle I don't think it's much of an issue. Also the top notch employees they want to hire are more likely to live where they want and won't have to consider COL as much considering the average salary will be 100K.

I just pointed out that there are two Texas cities on the list and that doesn't surprise me.
Personally I think the cost of living and doing business in the NE could be cost prohibitive but I'm pretty sure that Amazon's business development team is very aware of all the economic factors and will make a good economic decision.
Yeah but Texas has to compete with cheap locations near the important Northeast corridor like Nashville and Raleigh.
Raleigh has several advantages: huge lots of cheap land near and within the Downtown Raleigh area, 3 massive and important research and engineering unis (Duke, UNC, NCSU), it's one of the oldest and most mature tech hubs in the US, it's a short flight to DC and NYC.
It lacks more public transportation but there's a heavy commuter rail (and BRT) in the works and near Duke and UNC there's a Light Rail in the plans as well. Frankly, right now there's just not that much traffic in Raleigh yet.

Philly would be a great option. Anywhere along the NE corridor is a win for the entire Northeast in my opinion except Boston because it's so far removed.
Yea, they've already made their decision down to probably 5 cities. All the others better milk this as positive press for other companies that's considering moving/expanding.

This could have major political ramifications as well. If Amazon could have the same economic effect on, say, Columbus or Indy as it has had on Seattle, it would be like dropping a Democratic atom bomb in the heart of the Midwest.

It's not a question of whether it's already blue. It's a question of growth. If metro Columbus doubles in size, it's going to drag the state as a whole to the left.
Jeff Bezos is a Democrat. He has given millions of $ away and nearly all to a democratic candidates.

Regarding the list, I'm not sure where they're going to go but seeing this list, I'm pretty sure it's going to be a city on the east coast.
