~200k population is okay though 150miles to real big though indeed ugly (judging from google street view) city Detroit is kind of long way.
Dont think "world class beaches" around there can match to florida, california, chicago or orvirginia beaches...
Right now i trying to think of a state, i leave choosing city for bit later.

Illinois--Chicago, rolling hills down south-keeper
Indiana--always vote republican but beautiful farmland--keeper
Maryland---my home state and favorite state-America in Miniature--keeper
Michigan--economy sucks but beautiful shores and lakes--keeper
Minnesota--lots of lakes---keeper
New York--NYC, finger lakes, mountains, great scenery--keeper
North Carolina--Ashville, Outer Banks---keeper
Ohio---lots of interesting cities, hills--keeper

I have heard that Chicago and Cleveland have very ugly architecture is that true?

Yep, Chicago isn't even close to being ugly.
In defense of Cleveland: The city has a bygone-era, industrial aura that can be quite appealing. They've done some cool things downtown with the bridges and the Flats. I remember visiting Cleveland one time - I arrived at night. The city was in the distance, and as I headed up the freeway, there where antique-looking smokestacks belching colorful flames into the air. I felt like I was on the set of Blade Runner with Harrison Ford about to whizz by in one of those flying cars.
Some of the older neighborhoods around Cleveland are beautiful too, like Shaker Heights. Unfortunately because of the subprime debacle, the city is being severely challenged right now - but they will overcome.
Well I wouldn't suggest to a young woman to hop a greyhound and head to
L.A. to follow her dreams either.
