I consider the Gulf Coast to be a coast what with it being a coast, and all.

And the fact that it has some very important ports means it is a significant, if not high-profile, coast.

You might want to look at a map sometime, the majority of Australia is in the Indian Ocean.

Of course it’s a coast. But when people refer to something having to do with “the coasts,” I think only of the east and west coasts. Someone would specifically have to refer to “the Gulf coast” for me to make the link.

The Midwest and the South hold 59% of our nation's population. Who cares what the other coasts think. Honestly, though, I'm sure they don't care if it's a coast, or not. Only on this forum is it debated. (It is a coast, btw).

It's a coast in every definition of the term - the person who asked should be ashamed of asking such a ridiculous question. The Gulf Coast is really just an extension of the Atlantic coastline (it looks the same from the vegetation to the barrier islands to the marine life).

However, when people talk about the "Coasts" what they mean is the eastern and western ridges of the lower 48. It usually excludes Alaska, Hawaii, and the Gulf Coast. This does not mean that these places aren't on a Coast. In fact when people talk about "Coastal Elites" they really mean the BoWash corridor and Los Angeles - Seattle.
