Been looking at Pittsburgh a lot I have never been but from my basic research seems to be a pretty close match to my home city of Albany in terms of weather and scenery ( mountains /forests ) to keep my sanity .

How do the cities differ in terms of outdoor options , hiking , camping etc

Are summers more humid in Pitt ?

Most importantly overally cost of living ?

I would rent first to make sure I like the city but eventually want to own a home .
So Pittsburgh is booming are rental prices out of this world still ?

How's traffic ?

And can you survive in the city a diehard fan of a non Pittsburgh city or is it just diehard steelers evrywhwre you go?

Pittsburgh a definite promotion over Albany. It's much bigger, has prestige univ, a burgeoning post industrial economy and a hip scene. Not just a tired state capital. Not considered expensive in national context. Very hilly too, more so than Albany. Albany has better access to high value country-- Adks, lakes, Vt., W Mass-- as compared to western PA.

Albany has actually had population growth in recent years and has some hip neighborhoods like this one: http://centersquarealbany.com

With this said, Pittsburgh is a little bit more affordable, but likely has more traffic. This will depend on what exactly the OP is looking for.

I much prefer staying in upstate New York but more north ( Saratoga area) but it's expensive and hard to research and it's basically my back yard

Just in the area forum or perhaps look into the Glens Falls area a little bit further north.
