LA obviously has the nicest looking ghettos that make good back drops for TV, movies, and music videos

What are some others?

I think DFW hoods have nice backdrops too.

I haven't been to Watts or Compton, but South Central looks much worse irl than on tv. There's no question you're in the hood.

Take a look at this street view:

This neighborhood has 28 homicides on the year.

California cities probably top the list

Chicago does have some well intact lower income hoods, despite all the murders in many of them.

Note: Some are ghettos more so in the traditional sense, while others are stomping grounds for warring gangs and high crime levels

Armour Square(Chinatown)
Poverty rate: 35.8%
No HS diploma: 37.5%

Brighton Park

No HS diploma- 48%
murder rate as of 2017- 39.7/18

South Lawndale/Little Village

This is the nicest part of Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood. It IS really nice, and not indicative of the neighborhood, as a whole. Most of the neighborhood is solidly middle-class (they’ve even got a decent little municipal golf course on the shore of Lake Michigan), but there are a couple of really rough pockets.

It's the Jackson Highlands, a sub-neighborhood of South Shore on Chicago's Southeast side. South Shore has a high murder rate, but that particular area is middle-class/upper middle class.

Declining neighborhoods in the South may have ramshackle buildings, but at least they are GREEN! You have to love the South's abundant vegetation.

East Oakland looks really nice, away from the main streets.
