In today's world of 24 hour news and terrible stories about crime I am shocked by the number of people who have their doors unlocked. I see many people with their doors open and screen doors unlocked also. I walked my entire neighborhood and knocked on doors for our neighborhood association and most people when they came to the door you could tell their door was unlocked. This is in Phoenix Arizona with all the illegal alien crime!
-- I always lock my door when I leave, I don't see any real reason why you wouldn't just turn a key to protect virtually everything in your posession. Even if I lived in an extremely remote/rural area, I would still do this. In fact, that should give someone all the more reason to do it.
I don't really have to worry about it, but since I have a lock, I might as well use it for what it's there for. So I usually lock it. Always at night. There hasn't been a burglary in this neighborhood in years and according to City-Data, I allegedly live in the 16th safest city in the US, but I still don't altogether feel immune. Wherever there are homosapiens there are burglars.

However over the summer a family who sleeps with their windows open, had someone take the screen off a window, come in the house knowing the entire family was in there asleep. Thats pretty ballsy if you ask me.
I saw a program on Courtv that talked about some surprising things that people do when they try to break in a house, the day time is a good time because people are usually at work. They often try the door or ring the bell to see if someone is at home, or if they are organized, they will call the house first to see if anyone answers.
All my doors are locked. I don't arm the alarm system during the day unless I am out of the house and at night.
My .38 is always loaded and within arms reach at night.
My development isn't even that nice compared to some of the other ones around here. It's just that people look out for each other here and probably by luck more than anything, no burglars. A lot of people also work from home here like myself so there so it tends to be largely occupied during the day time. Most burglaries are actually during the daytime, despite common belief, because that's when homes are unoccupied and neighborhoods tend to have less activity. Burglaries aren't totally random, they are very much a selection process like you said. Maybe not that well thought out, but usually not random.

Part of our problem is the area teens like to come here. I don't even leave a garage door opener in my truck when its NOT in the garage. They have broken in my truck before. I have one of those radios with the removable faceplate.
