When I lived in the deep south states (Alabama, Louisiana, and especially Georgia), I noticed that people there who were white looked very mixed. For a while in Georgia, I was spending time with (to keep it as PG as possible) with a couple of women who had Anglo sounding names and a southern accent but they looked very Italian/Latina.

It kinda confused the life out of me and I didn't want to be rude so I never asked them. For some reason the south had an abundance of brunettes with tans who looked very Mediterranean and swarthy. Thought Scot-Irish and English were the most common descent down south.

Its different because here in the upper midwest, I run into an abundance of blondes and Caucasian Americans that more closely match the Northern European look.

Why is this?

Maybe you took a wrong turn and ended up in the Northeast.
Seriously, this isn't a 'thing'. People from all regions of the country have been coming here for decades, marrying the locals and reproducing.
My daughters were all raised here; I'm a WASP from Atlanta, their father 100% Italian from Providence, RI. Who knows, maybe you hooked up with one of them.

A lot of Irish people are naturally a bit tanned. I think it's called "Black Irish" eg Colin Farrell. Some people may suspect that the Black Irish have mixed genes but I doubt it, it's rather that they don't carry the mutation for blondism in numbers similar to other northern europeans.

The reason Black Irish are relevant is because the South is largely Anglo-Celtic derived, especially in Appalachia. But to be honest, I never noticed what you noticed. A lot of the folk in Appalachia are fairly light skinned. A lot of redheads, blondes or chestnut hair color among them. Blue eyes are almost a rule.

Could be a little Cherokee ...or Seminole mixed in there somewhere...

Some of the white people in the south actually have a small amount of black ancestry. It is just so far back that they don't know it. Genetic testing is changing that. There was an article about it in the Washington Post a few years ago:

It was called the African slave trade. It's the same reason that many "Whites" in Latin American countries have a swarthy look.

Maybe because they're tanned from the strong sun?

Also, many white people in Louisiana are of French and or Italian descent.

This question reminds me of the diner scene from Easy Rider, one of the "good old boys" almost looks mestizo.

Because people move different places. Next question.
