Almost no snow, mild winters, slightly milder than St. George, Utah.
Hot but not too hot summers, only 20 miles away from high elevation recreation
in Cloudcroft, 4,500 ft higher in elevation.
Las Cruces, NM is very good to but is about 40 minutes from El Paso,
which I don't think is too high crime, however nearby Juarez is high crime
2) Mild winters that barely ever get below freezing
3) Size of at least 50,000 people
4) Located at least (preferably further) an hour away (driving time) from ANY higher crime city of any size
5) Good restaurant scene or outdoor activities or good shopping
Can't seem to find anything that comes close to hitting all 5
Is cost of living an issue with you? In terms of crime, generally speaking, if you just stay out of high crime areas and are aware of your surroundings, it will never be an issue. At least an hour away seems a bit extreme to me and really limits yourself unnecessarily, IMO. Some mentioned Portland, but if the degree that you're wanting to avoid crime at all, Portland or any good sized city won't fit the bill. But that's fine if that's what you want. I know I probably have some personal preferences of places that some would find not to their liking. Las Cruces NM or St. George UT, maybe. Maybe somewhere in the Sarasota/Bradenton area of Florida. Good luck in your search.
I would have said Charleston, SC, but nearby North Charleston, SC is a lot rougher (they are still separate entities, though). Then I thought Raleigh, NC but Durham, NC is half an hour away. Maybe Savannah, GA? I don't know. My advice is not to be paranoid about the crime taking place a few miles away and get a freaking alarm for your door.
Yeah, all three of those places have high crime areas close by, unfortunately.
I think St George is a great idea. I can't think of a better one.
