I am surprised by this fact too. But I think it has to do with the South covering so much land area and 14 states (WV, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, KY, TN, AL, MS, LA, AR, TX, and OK). FL and TX are massive - making up nearly 50 million people. I mean look at Texas with 250k square miles of land (it is larger than France, and twice the size of Germany or Japan). Texas could quite literally be its own country (it would be the 27th largest by land area in the world). Also, GA, VA, and NC are heavy contenders as well with pops close to 10 million a piece.
I recently read that the south is the most populated region in the country. Why do you think this is?
Most people prefer hot climate over cold climate. The only issue is hot climate places in the US have more crime, since they have higher population like Los Angeles and Miami. It's weird how people said A/C made the South more popular, but if someone lives in the south, aren't they supposed to "get used to the hot" and cherish the heat? My parents came from a tropical country (not saying where), but they told me in their country, they were used to the heat and humidity to the point where you can't feel it, since they were born into it.
Retirees coming from the baby boom generation tend to prefer hot climates so that add more population to the south.
It's a combination of population density and landsize. The South doesn't have the highest population density in the US...That would be the Northeast but geographically the Northeast is much smaller than the South.
The West has more land area then South, but the population density is the smallest in the country there.
The South's population density can be attributed to two factors.
1)The South was one of the first regions inhabited. Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia were part of the 13th original colonies. As a result, the South has had a long time to amass towns and cities in comparison to more recently settled areas in the midwest and especially the West.
2)Parts of the South are now in the sunbelt (Florida, Texas) and are attracting people from the North for lower cost of living and warmer weather.
South - 16 states, 121.2 million people
West - 13 states, 75.8 million people
Midwest - 11 states, 61.9 million people
Northeast - 9 states, 56.1 million people
I was surprised to find that the West was the second largest by population.
