Let's say if you either sold all your prized possessions or lost all of them and need to start completely fresh, without familial ties for any reason whatsoever, what city would you choose and why?
Well, not a city, and if I could make it affordable, the great state of Hawai'i.
If you pinned me to cities, then on Oahu, downtown Honolulu/Waikiki.
Or Lahina on Maui.
Or Lihue on Kauai.
But so much of the state's islands are beautiful, I'd be hard pressed to say one is better than another, except to say leeward side, or upper land area, though not too high up.
It was always my dream to retire to Hawai'i, but I've settled for frequent visits so I can explore. Next trip is 2020.
Our chosen retirement city is southern mainland, though. I'm not giving away my secret retirement city!

Miami most likely. I would go for the tropical weather, beaches, and nightlife.
Within North America, I would go with DFW, where I live. My favorite city is Seattle, but there is no way I will be able to afford that on my own, straight out of college. Every other city has the problem of being too expensive, too cold, too humid, or too small. Or making my allergies go crazy, like Atlanta, which might be my pick had it not been the case. Also, before all the people from the northern USA jump on me, yeah, it is only cold three to five months a year, but that is still much more than I am used to and it isn't like I will have the funds to travel south during the winters.

We can and have gone where we want when we want with all of our material possessions and family ties.
No need to not do something if one wants to and we have always lived where we want to live so we would still live where we currently do.
