350 business expansions and relocations but of what size and jobs generated? A study recently released does not show Chicagoland as one of the ten metros areas that have changed the most from 2006 through 2016. This Place Sure Has Changed: Which Cities Have Changed the Most? - MagnifyMoney

Boston - Genzyme to France, EMC to Austin, FleetBoston to Charlotte (even though the CEO lives in Boston)

A wide variety, some are probably small expansions, some very large. Some relocations from within the region, many from outside.

Financial and professional service jobs are up around 150,000 over the past 6-7 years. Healthcare is up around 40,000 and hotel and hospitality are up 60,000. A lot of those jobs are tied to business/corporate expansions.

There's been an ongoing rebalancing of jobs in the region since the recovery started in 2010:

Professional: +130,000
Healthcare/Education: +80,000
Leisure/Hospitality: +60,000
Government: -25,000
Manufacturing: -60,000

Manufacturing has really dropped off. Only 7.5% of jobs in Chicago in 2017 directly relate to manufacturing. It's been a huge reason for the confusion over how the region is doing, part of it is doing very poorly, part of it is booming. Overall there is no one answer.

In 1990 Chicago had 90,000 more manufacturing jobs than Professional/Business jobs. In 2017 there are 418,000 more Professional/Business jobs than manufacturing.
