I’d say anywhere where people have to work a lot to stay “afloat” would qualify.
Like the San Francisco area. Rent & housing is stupid expensive, so unless you’re one of the high flying techies, or doctor, etc...It takes a considerable amount of work to make $$$ to survive
But “surviving” comfortably will vary from person to person. Someone making $2K in SF area who lives with 3/4 roomies could only be paying $500-$800 for rent, so that might be comfortable to them. Where as I hate roommates and would much rather live in my own place and pay $2200 (like I do now). But luckily I make enough to be perfectly fine for this.

Yeah, i was kinda thinking SF where it's just as expensive as NYC but the entertainment pales in comparison.
DC fits the bill. DC used to have the best Black Nightlife in the country. It's declined a LOT, but it's still better than average. Non-black DC is pretty boring.
What about Washington D.C.? I would agree that the higher the cost of living is, the more work is required. It seems like other cities with a similar cost of living like New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, etc. have a greater outgoing/nightlife aspect to them.
And I believe the answer is the San Jose metro. There is no real down time from work imo having worked there for sone years now.
One of the main reasons I live in Oakland is to get away from that all tech, 24/7 mentality in the valley. I dont need to be working on 3 side projects and 2 start ups apart from my actual profession-and almost everyone I know is doing that.
Not saying SF has no entertainment, it's just a tier or two below NYC's quality.
Not at all. Most 2017 rankings of most fun and/or entertaining cities dont put NY a 'tier or two' above any city actually. SF tends to be in the same tier in most public opinion polls and surveys that I skimmed thru in the past 10 minutes.
I generally feel that any 3 Million+ CSA/MSA provides good to great entertainment, even many smaller are great( NOLA, Vegas, Honolulu immediately come to mind)
