Atlanta isn't an option for reasons that I don't want to get into, and although New Orleans is the top choice, it's not good for a person to put all of their eggs in one basket. I'm asking this question for my younger brother, whose a recent architecture graduate who also paints and writes. He's newly married and is trying to choose a place to live for him and his wife. He'd prefer to move to the west coast, but his wife's parents live in Atlanta so he is trying to compromise with her by choosing a city down south.

Aside from that, the criteria for the city is that it's somewhat substantial in size, isn't centered on one industry or complex (like a college town) and is preferably older, with an attractive and interesting built environment.

Louisville, Richmond, Charleston, Savannah, Asheville.

Not as older but Chattanooga and Greenville could be options as well.

Louisville, Charleston, and Savannah all come to mind. They all have history, artsy areas, urban areas, etc...

You could also throw in Birmingham, Greenville, and maybe Alexandria (VA).

I will also go with Savannah, the students at SCAD probably make up almost 10% of the city's population.

What does "all of your eggs in one basket" mean if NO is the top choice?
Regarding size, there's not many other cities that quality outside if maybe Louisville and Richmond.

Raleigh? Interesting...I'd put Durham and Winston-Salem over Raleigh for sure.

Both Durham & Winston-Salem have multiple colleges, and both each have a large college (Duke & Wake Forest).

It’s says no college town

Of "substantial" size I am thinking Richmond, Louisville, St Petersburg (FL) jump out. Charleston and Asheville if you can go a bit smaller. Even smaller still then Savannah.

I'm assuming because he'll be seeking gainful employment as an architect then it will be nice to have several options as he applies for jobs.
