I am looking for a metropolitan area with a population of 1.5 million+ people. In this area, I'd like to live in a central, convenient, and somewhat suburban feeling city that's very safe and clean. I don't really care about cultural amenities such as museums or professional sports. I do care about being near resources such as medical facilities, higher learning institutions, and generally not needing to travel far to do things like shop. I am not worried about public schools. Not too expensive of housing (Like SF, Boston, LA, NYC, etc), and preferably somewhere with mild winters (but that's not a deal breaker). I want an all around place that is good for people from their 30s-70s and beyond, not just a place for young people or retirees.

Austin and Raleigh have been suggested to me before. Any other ideas? Thank you so much.

Let me add that I like edge cities like Irvine, CA and Bellevue, WA (but they're too expensive).

Irvine & Bellevue is pretty on pace with the Bay Area, LA, etc...when it comes to rent. You’re looking around $2K for a 1 bedroom in Irvine.

If winters aren’t a deal breaker, Minneapolis/St Paul could very well be a fit. Raleigh & Austin also could be (as you noted). Even a place like Louisville, KY could work for you.
