I hate my job. I'm thinking of quitting and moving while I study to get myself on a new career path. Financially, I can easily afford this, but of course it will be a bit of a set back. I'm planning a break of about 6 months.
I'd like to stay in the southeast since that's where my family is and it's a pretty affordable region. I'm not exactly sure what I will do on this break since my work life over the last 5 years has led to me losing interest in everything. I will definitely want to get outdoors and do things like hike and ride my bike, though. I would like a walkable downtown, good cafes to hang out at, hiking and cycling trails.
I haven't been to any of these cities, but based on reputation I came up with a few ideas:
- Charleston, SC - (good live music and downtown I hear, not so keen on the beach and humidity though)
- Savannah, GA
- Nashville, TN
- Asheville, NC (really like the mountain location)
For the criteria you state, Asheville's a great choice. Especially if it's mountain biking that you're into, though there's great and challenging road biking there too.
The biggest gripe about Asheville is that employment can be challenging, but that's not an issue for you. The culture there (liberal and granola-filled) can be a turn-off for some, but it doesn't sound like that'd be an issue for you.
I love Asheville. I live in a slightly larger NC city because it's a better balance of work opportunity and lifestyle, but if I had a portable job or was looking to take a break, I'd give Asheville a hard look.
If you want affordable and mountains look at Chattanooga & Knoxville. They both have good cycling & hiking opportunities, walkable downtowns etc. Plus opportunities to further your education.

Why are you trying to argue? There was no comment made directly saying Asheville is better than other places for mountain biking, simply said Asheville has great mountain biking.
Asheville will have scenic mountain biking on the forest service roads. Knoxville's trails are purpose built and can be more technical.
For all we know the OP would prefer a paved greenway.
