I will post the map I made of counties I visited in the US. My total is a pathetic 731 out of 3141. I think this is a much better barometer of how much you've traveled, compared to how many states you've visited. For instance, I've been in 47 states, but only 20% of the counties. Many of these counties were compiled by virtue of driving across the country various times on different Interstates.
That being said... there are a lot of places in the U.S. that I just see no reason to go to... I've been to a little less than 40 states, and I'd say 5 of those not much there, and only about 5 more I'd want to go to and that is Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Hawaii...
In contrast I've also been to 28 countries... where I think there is more to see.
