As an aside one of my biggest pet peeves is that in Ohio, highway signs display it as "Erie Pa" not "Erie PA". A small nitpick, but it irritates me.
Most signs in New York state just display it as "Erie" with no state following. Is it common anywhere else for control cities to have a state abbreviation as well?
To be more precise, a resident of Cove Fort could say that the farthest away that his city appears on an interstate sign is Baltimore. I'd say it's quite rare for such a tiny town to appear on a sign over 2,000 miles away! Unfortunately, Cove Fort does not reciprocate.
The farthest away that Baltimore appears on an interstate sign is on I-70 in Breezewood, PA, which is about 125 miles away. The entrance ramp to I-70 east is signed for Baltimore, and then shortly past that interchange is the first mileage sign that lists it.
There was a reciprocal sign in Wilmington, NC at the eastern end of I-40 going westbound, but it keeps getting stolen and I think the NCDOT has given up replacing it every time. I can't seem to find it on Google Street View from Dec 2016.
Since these 2,554 miles signs are mostly "gimmicky", I think you meant the control cities on interstate signs.

The reason Cove Is listed in Baltimore is because that's where I-70 ends.
