Hi,
This is my first post so apologies if misplaced or if wrong.

Me and my husband were considering to move North East (no state in particular). We currently live in NC and have lived/traveled all over the south. We both are growing tired of the area and want to look for somewhere with not so much crime and more culture/nature.

It seems like NC typically sways one way or the other- if you move closer to the cities you have more cultural choices and diversities, but have high violent crime rates. Where as the more off-the-beaten-path areas have nature but no diversity.

I want to also avoid the huge city areas such as Washington, NYC, and Boston.

But by far the biggest issues I'm having are imagining the cost of living in some North Eastern states. All of my family/friends (who have never moved out of state) say that the upper states are expensive- especially if I'm looking for a decent size house with over 1 acre.

I'll probably have more questions later as I'm pretty analytical.

We both love downtowns and are both pretty crafty. We're animal lovers so having a safe place for our fur-babies is a must. We're also avid gamers so... decent internet availability?

When looking at the Northeast look at the area and the further inland in the region, the more affordable.

I would say given what you are looking for, I’d say to look into a place/area like Geneva NY. It is a small and quite diverse city(about 13-14% Black and Hispanic each) with a nice Downtown. It is on a Finger Lake and you could likely find properties outside of the city/in the town of the same name. Its crime rate is average, with generally lower violent crime rates. It is also has Hobart/William Smith Colleges.

It is also just within the Rochester metro, which has a pretty good gaming scene. So, you would be within close proximity to that as well.

Places/areas like Hudson, Oneonta, Catskill, more affordable parts of Ithaca(and surrounding area) and perhaps Corning, among others, also in NY.

Some information: Downtown Geneva, New York 14456 - The Difference is Downtown!

Visit Hudson NY | Shop, Explore, Eat, Drink, and Stay in Hudson, NY

Dining, Shopping, Services - Destination Downtown Oneonta, NY

Heart of Catskill Association

Downtown Ithaca - Downtown Ithaca Alliance

Corning's Gaffer District

Hopefully others will suggest other potential places.

If you're looking for a lower CoL while still being in proximity to several downtowns, Northern and Central Delaware fit the bill. If you're not averse to driving, Middletown offers 1+ acre homes starting at $300K. Kent County DE is even cheaper, though obviously further away from Wilmington/Philadelphia/Baltimore.

Wow, thank you so much for all this info. I'm looking into them and they all seem to have beautiful downtowns and historical sites. (I especially like the Catskill area)

I did look at Deleware, but it seems like the entire state doesn't have a good crime rate...

Rochester, NY!

Very affordable, plenty to do, homes with yards, etc...I had a chance to move to Rochester last year, and regret not jumping on the opportunity

Where did you move from? (if you don't mind me asking)

I don't know much about rural living (assuming this is what you are looking for given your OP), but upstate NY does have plenty to offer you. If you're "crafty" and enjoy a *safe* walkable area, consider the New Scotland or Helderberg neighborhoods in Albany. It's a quick 5 minute drive (straight shot) to the downtown/Center Square area. The best thing about these neighborhoods is New Scotland Ave. Has a post office, Greek restaurant, pizza places, two Italian delis, Elementary school, Dunkin Donuts, banks, right on this walkable avenue. These neighborhoods are among the most safe in the city.

Only downside is you won't be able to find a 1 acre spot. However, drive 20 minutes in any direction out of Albany and you're pretty much in the country part of the state.

You could also look into Scotia or Glenville, those may have better options for you if you're looking for more land.

Glens Falls could be a good option for you too. South Glens Falls (separate town) will have larger plots of land to choose from and is a short distance from Glens Falls' new downtown.

Greatest thing about the Capital Region is COL is significantly lower than downstate. Not as cheap as Buffalo or Rochester, but still very affordable.

I am from So.Indiana/Louisville, KY. I moved to the Bay Area (California) about 2 years ago. I was offered a promotion with my company that required a move to Rochester. I visited and loved it, but decided against it. I’m still not entirely sure why

I guess I just want more space between me and my neighbors more than anything. Privacy. It seems like a lot of upstate NY is close to what I might be looking for. Almost like I should be asking instead "Where shouldn't I live".

Thanks for the suggestions~
