While partially true (Newark is further along in its revitalization), the other factors don't exist in Detroit. Like I've said before and that poster said, the airport, harbor, cargo and passenger train tracks, and highway systems of Newark make it a great city for shipping and traveling. It connects seamlessly to all the major cities of the northeast. On top of that, it is entirely feasible and almost a guarantee that the highly educated urbanites of Manhattan will easily be able to commute out to Newark on PATH. Detroit doesn't have an NYC right next to it within a 20-45 minute subway ride. Newark also has better intra-city transport with two train stations, a light rail, and tons of NJT buses. Detroit has the people mover.
While there are similarities between Detroit and Newark, Newark is definitely the far more logical option all things considered.
I don't disagree with any of that.
My point was simply Detroit would have been the better choice if revitalizing a city was Bezos' goal, and the fact that Detroit didn't make the shortlist means that's not what he's focused on doing. For all the reasons you state, Newark doesn't *NEED* revitalization as much as Detroit does.
Amazon is part of the high-tech service sector relying on highly skilled labour and even more so in it`s headquarters. Of course these highly skilled workers are in high demand all over the country in all sectors which is why unemployment for the group is near zero and wages are very high.
To entice these workers to move to an area for a job, high pay is only part of the equation. There are other equally important things as well such as quality of life, crime, schools {K to 12 & post-secondary} urban vitality, public transit, culture, liberal lifestyle, and more. Sorry but telling someone they can get a high paying job and get to live in Detroit is not an enticement. Yes Detroit is coming back but let`s be serious, it has a VERY long way to go before anyone will think of moving there no matter how cheap the housing is. Amazon knew this which is why it never made the top 20.
Facebook just doubled down on Chicago.... expanding their offices by signing a lease for an additional 263,000 square feet... expected to add an estimated 2,000 (or more) high paying jobs ... quote: “Chicago has been our Midwest home since 2007, and we’re excited to grow our presence here with increased hiring and a new office at 151 North Franklin,” Matty de Castro, Facebook U.S. head of industry, said in an emailed statement. “Our continued investment in this community underscores its strong talent pipeline and thriving technology ecosystem, which make it a great location to expand our Global Marketing Solutions and Recruiting teams.”
Facebook’s deal continues an expansion by some of the largest technology companies in Chicago, where many of the jobs are in sales and marketing.
...Officials in Chicago and 19 other North American locations still in the running await news of Amazon’s decision ...
“Facebook’s decision to double down on Chicago with new jobs and investment is a testament to the talent of our residents and the incredible strength of our fast-growing tech sector,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement.

That would be Facebook's #3 or #4 campus...in the Seattle area. If I'm getting the various news reports right. Four buildings on the north side of Downtown/SLU, a couple on the south side, and some buildings in Redmond including new purchases.
That article has nothing to do with Denver, or HQ2 for that matter.
Headline:
"Louisville’s Phillips 66 property — touted for Amazon HQ2 — back on the market"
Louisville is a suburb of Denver. HQ2 is, well, HQ2. An real estate investment firm wanted to buy the land to then sell it to Amazon for HQ2. They have now backed out of the deal. Presumably there's not much hope of HQ2 coming to Denver (metro).
It is July 24th, 2018 and still no word from Amazon.
September 7th, 2017 to present day.
I see.
I know right--it's been a long, long time waiting.
I feel like when they do make the "big announcement," it will be much less "major" and more watered down from both the original size and employee numbers, as they originally quoted.
It's gotta be announced by September, I would think though.
