So I'm from Utica, NY, in Upstate NY, and I was messing around with distance tools on maps like as the crow flies and found out some interesting ones I didn't think were true:

Utica is 176 miles from New York City, but driving wise it's 232 on the Thruway.

184 miles from Buffalo.

186 miles from Montreal.

217 miles from Philadelphia.

218 miles from Boston.

305 miles from Washington, DC.

306 miles from Pittsburgh.

340 miles from Toronto.

Washington, DC is about a seven hour drive from Utica and Pittsburgh is five, but as the crow flies, DC is actually closer by a mile. Also crazy that Philadelphia and Boston are almost exactly equidistant.

Anyone have some interesting ones where you're from or just in general?

Wait, DC is a longer drive from Utica than Pittsburgh? That seems odd, as both are about 5 and a half/6 hours from Syracuse.

Anyway, none of them are surprising given the central location in NY and the Northeast.

Yes, DC is usually an hour or so longer depending on traffic and speed, than Pittsburgh.

Pensacola, FL is closer to Evansville, IN or Louisville, KY than it is to Miami as the crow flies.

Comparable distances (within 20 miles) will also get you from Pensacola to College Station, TX, to the outskirts of St. Louis, and to Fayetteville, Arkansas (far northwest corner of the state).

Alaska's islands stretch further west than Auckland, New Zealand.

I believe the southeastern corner of Michigan is barely closer to north Georgia than it is to the far reaches of Isle Royale, Michigan.

Atlanta is closer to Chicago than it is to Miami.

Detroit is closer to Atlanta than it is to Boston.

I may be back with more of these.
