Another thread has reminded me that the South is full of historic cities and towns, but we often only hear about Charleston, Savannah, Annapolis or Alexandria which are incredibly well-preserved; or the larger historic cities with over a million in the metro like Memphis, New Orleans, Richmond, Louisville, etc. What are some of the low key, smaller or underrated historic cities and towns of the south that we rarely hear about? Are there hidden well-preserved locales in the South you think are worth a visit?
For example, I feel that places like these are underrated for their history and architecture:
*For this thread, I would exclude Old Salem, NC and Williamsburg, VA since these are purposely preserved/restored locales for tourism and don't function exactly the way traditional cities do. And I am also shooting for a broader definition of the South, to include Maryland so that nobody feels left out and we don't miss the point.
Small, low-key area (pop.around 15K), it’s on the National Register of Historic Places, and still has some preserved areas for the history lesson sort of speak. It’s a nice little town, gets forgotten because of Louisville & Lexington.
The entire downtown of Pendleton in the western part of SC is on the National Register of Historic Places. A lot of famous people lived in the area to include John C. Calhoun. There are several historic plantations homes in the area to include Fort Hill at nearby Clemson University.
I also suggest Frederick Maryland.
Camden, Georgetown and Beaufort are the oldest cities in SC after Charleston.
Fredrick MD is very nicely reserved and very pretty.

Winchester VA
Portsmouth for sure!
Leesburg VA
I haven’t been to many small towns south of here (VA) but the entire country has done a pretty good job restoring our old towns over the last 30 years.
