Cleveland is off most peoples' radar when it comes to urban environments, however the presence of a heavy rail mass transit system will come as a surprise as well as the population density and walkability of many of the neighborhoods. The west side border suburb of Lakewood is a great option with very affordable lakeview/lakefront highrise condos and apartments (rentals) in close walking proximity to all the necessities plus two RTA rail stations.
Pretty much Interior Northeastern and Midwestern cities.
Indeed. My first thought was actually some of the smaller Eastern PA cities, like Harrisburg, York, Lancaster, Allentown, Reading, etc. Walkable and packed to the gills with rowhouses. Most of these cities have seen an influx of Latinos from NYC in recent years though, so there's no demand to live there. The average one bedroom rent seems to be in the $800-$900 range in most of these cities, which is on the low end nationally but not dirt cheap. Still, it's a lot more urban than you would get in Indianapolis or something.
Which cities can you find the absolute cheapest, non scam apartments?
With some urbanity. Not necessarily NYC level of course, but have some sort of city vibe to them at least.
I have a feeling Ohio will do well with this.
