My boyfriend and I want to move down south. We are in our late 20’s/early 30’s and are currently living in the Midwest. We are DONE with freezing cold winters and want some nicer, warmer weather with mild winters. We are just beginning our search so we’d love to get some suggestions on possible areas to look into.
Looking for...
-Affordable housing and low cost of living.
-Charm! We want picturesque with houses that don’t look cookie cutter.
-Small to mid-sized area. We don’t want to be downtown or have to deal with lots of traffic. It’d be nice to have a bigger city within a driveable distance though.
-Low crime. Safety is a big concern especially since we want kids eventually.
-On that note....we’d like quality schools. For our future kids and also because my boyfriend is a teacher.
-We love the water so it’d be great to be close to lakes or the ocean.
-We aren’t big drinkers so we don’t care about the bar scene but it’d be nice to have some good food options.
Any suggestions for areas that might fit the bill? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Not to sound too discouraging, but it'd be hard to find all that in the south. Low crime, affordable, good schools, and picturesque/not cookie cutter is a tall order for the region. Maybe a place along the coast.

And sub, thanks. Not discouraging at all- I understand there’s never going to be that perfect paradise type place that has the exact combination of features we’re looking for. Just trying to find what areas might check the most amount of boxes. I agree an area along the coast may be a good fit, just hard to know where to start narrowing that down.

Check out Fernandina Beach FL. It's the northernmost point in FL, less than 30 minutes from downtown Jacksonville. It has a beautiful (and charming) historic downtown and adjoining neighborhoods with non-cookie cutter homes. It's a fairly safe town with very good public schools as the district ranks among the top few in the state of FL. The beaches are beautiful and as a part of what's considered Amelia Island, full of unspoiled areas with lots of nature.
New Bern, NC - Although it is very small, the downtown/historic neighborhoods could fit the picturesque image you're looking for. Great weather and right next to the ocean.
Wilmington, NC - small city feel and multiple beaches within a 20-25 minute drive. Rent is cheap here for a city this size.
Savannah, GA
Wilmington, NC - used to live there and the downtown area on the river is picturesque, while the beaches on the other side of town are prime.
Asheville, NC (if you can trade coast for mountains - cause Asheville is great)
I'm not sure if we should mention Charleston, SC? It's awesome but the historic area is really expensive. I think Savannah and Wilmington give you some of that same old-world charm for way less cost.
I'm not sure about schools in any of these places though...

Those are some that pop into my head immediately - they're all nice small cities but not sure about the schools - you'd need to do that research. Also, since you haven't been specific about what you mean by "affordable housing," I'm sort of guessing there too.
